Wild Science Celebrates World Snake Day!!

For an animal that has developed such a bad reputation over the years, I for one could not be happier that it has its very own day to celebrate!

These slithery reptiles are one of the oldest mycological creatures on the planet and still continue to astound and amaze us, I can give several reasons why they are I personally of my favorite animals.

  1. They are incredibly effective predators. This is important in balancing the forces of nature. In certain areas, if there were no snakes they would be overrun with mice and rats.
  2. Not many people know they are practically living cousins of dinosaurs In the days of the dinosaurs, reptiles were the dominating class of animal. Snakes themselves have remained unchanged for a very long time.
  3. They make the most amazing pets! As long as you know how to take care of the particular snake you have, being a snake owner can be extremely rewarding.
  4. They have the ability to separate their jaws in order to swallow their food! Probably the most famous trait that is typical to snakes.
  5. The ability to move with no arms or legs It’s amazing that they are able to move and balance without the need of any limbs. They have a very flexible spine so they can wrap themselves around objects and use a slither motion to push themselves forward. It is in fact their slithering motion that helps them to hunt in complete silence.

The list could go on and on, but I don’t think I would have enough pages.

Sadly, it is peoples lack of understanding which leads to a fear of snakes. Some snakes are venomous but most are not which is why world snake day needs to be celebrated to raise awareness of these lovely creatures. Starting with;

  • How do they eat?
  • What do they eat?
  • What do they do for our planet?

If you fear it; learn about it, respect it and understand it!
