Welcome to Wild Science’s favourite animals, we spend a lot of time talking about other animals on our pages but what about talking about some of our own?! As an Expert at Wild Science® we spend a large majority of our time working with a variety of different animals, moving around from nurseries to primary schools to residential homes providing the care and education they require. So what are our Expert’s favourite animals? I know what your thinking, with all the animals we must take care of, it wouldn’t be fair to pick just one. Well I would be lying to myself and everyone reading, if I didn’t have my main star. An animal that above all others is the most fascinating and unique.
Sophie Jameson – Operations Director says…“Amy the African Pygmy Hedgehog, she’s always well behaved, she’s a very popular animal, and there are so many interesting facts about them” African Pygmy Hedgehogs have become an extremely popular household pet, most people getting them because, I mean well look at that face. Can you get any cuter than that?! But do not let the look of the animal be the only reason you choose this as your pet. Although they can make extremely wonderful pets, you do need to do your research first. If you are looking to get one of these animals as a pet you are in luck, on our website we have care sheets on how to house, and correctly take care of these adorable creatures.
Lucy Johnson – Senior Expert says…“Madagascan Hissing Cockroach, without a doubt one of the most disrespected animals on the planet and very misunderstood. People know all the bad things but none of the good. They each have their own characters, and I love talking about them” Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches are one of the largest species of cockroach in the world, found obviously in Madagascar. Like 99% of all cockroach species they are not pests and do not take over kitchens or hotel rooms. When in fact they lend a hand to the environment by cleaning up organic materials on the forest floor. Handy little hoovers if you like. I can honestly tell you the world would be a much messier place if it wasn’t for amazing creatures like these.
Dion Kubicki – Animal Expert says…“My favourite animal to work with is Thor, my Hog Island Boa. This is due to the fact that he usually gets a great response from people because of his size, amazing colours/patterns & his comedic character”. The Hog Island Boa is a very popular snake for many reptile enthusiasts but is now sadly said to be extinct in the wild, so as you may have already guessed, correct housing and care is vital to this creatures survival. This colourful and beautiful snakes once slithered across the Cayos Cachinos Islands of Santa Elena and according to biologists, one has not been seen in the wild since the 1980’s. So you can imagine how excited we all were when we discovered Dion had one in is incredible menagerie.
Georgie Bardsley– Animal Expert says…“One of my favourites has to be the millipede, I think they’re very misunderstood and who wouldn’t love something that used to hang out with dinosaurs haha” Georgie has a Madagascan Rainforest Millipede, which obviously is also native to Madagascar. Millipedes are myriapods which is the same group as a centipede, just much friendlier. There are around 13,000 known species of millipede in the world and I think they are one of the most fascinating creatures in the world, I don’t even think Usain Bolt could move with that many legs.
Ashley Smith – Animal Expert at Wild Science says…“I would have to say the tortoise as they are always full of character and fun to watch as they move round and eat” Ashley owns three Herman Tortoises, a very popular reptile species kept as domestic pets. Native to the northern shores of the Mediterranean Sea these reptiles are full of personality. This is probably why they are so popular. Like all animals they require a great deal of care, to the correct temperature and diet to enrichment and most important of all, make sure you are in it for the long haul. For an animal that can live 75 years or over, its important to know you will always be around for you pet.
