Whites Tree Frog

Hi, I am the White Tree Frog, also called the Australian white Tree Frog. I’m pudgy and green and have those cute little toe pads that help me climb. My eyes? Bulbous and horizontal pupils give me excellent night vision. Depending on my environment and mood, I can change colour—green, brown, or even speckled white. Some of us have white speckles on them all the time, which are called snowdrops.

Handling? Sure, mate! Just keep me damp and cosy in my tropical forest home. Additionally, I love to sing, especially after rain, and my croak can be quite loud!

Many people find me a bit confusing because my name includes the colour white, yet I do not turn that colour. This name comes from the surname of the person who discovered my species. My diet is quite varied; I primarily feast on insects and am not particularly choosy, often consuming anything that moves nearby with gusto.

Though I am an amphibian and spend much of my life in water, I do not breathe underwater. I rely on fresh air to survive, but I can also absorb oxygen through my skin and release carbon dioxide. You won’t often find me on the ground, as my name suggests, I am more at home high in the trees, where I sit in the small pools of water that collect in the leaves.

I am quite the jumper! I can leap up to 30 times my body length, whether in search of new habitats or chasing after food. Watching me can be entertaining; my vibrant colours shift and change, and my energetic jumps are a spectacle as I catch my prey. Initially, I may appear shy, but once I become accustomed to your presence, I am more than happy to be close by, adding a bit of joy to your day.
