Crested Gecko

Hey there! It's me, the crested gecko, a tree-dweller from New Caledonia (a place named after the Latin name of Scotland). My sticky toe pads? Perfect for climbing leaves and bark. I eat a variety of fruit, nectar, and insects. Moreover, I’m nocturnal, so you’ll see me most active at night. Welcome to my charming little terrarium. My skin is soft like velvet, and my eyes are very expressive. I have no eyelids, so I keep them up with my tongue to keep them clean, moist, and well. Though some geckos can drop their tails and regenerate a new one, I am not one of those. 

I am a remarkable creature, once considered extinct until my rediscovery in 1994. With a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, I enjoy a long and fulfilling life. My notable sticky pads are just one of my climbing aids; I also possess a fascinating adaptation known as a pseudo-thumb—a tiny claw located on the inside of my leg that helps me grip surfaces as I ascend.

Though I have a gentle demeanour, I will defend myself if I feel threatened. While I may bite, my small size means I lack the strength to cause serious harm or even draw blood. Take care, as I have a penchant for leaping; I can jump as far as 10 feet and move with surprising speed, making me an expert at evasion.

I'm somewhat shy and may take time to acclimate to your presence, but once I feel comfortable, you'll discover that I'm an incredibly captivating creature to observe and appreciate.
