Giant African Land Snail

Hello! I’m the Giant African Land Snail, a slow-moving but fascinating creature known for its impressive size. My shell can grow up to 8 inches in diameter and provides excellent protection. Furthermore, I can retract my entire body into it when threatened. I love eating leaves, fruits, and vegetables.

My slime might look gross, but it helps me move smoothly, keeps my body moist, and even has healing properties. I have both male and female reproductive organs, which allows me to mate with any other snail of my species. Furthermore, I’m incredibly resilient and can survive in various environments, making me a popular choice for classrooms and pet enthusiasts. My slow pace and gentle nature make me a unique and educational pet.

You might encounter many of my kind in the vibrant rainforest ecosystem where I reside, as we can lay an astonishing 1,200 eggs each year. Typically, I thrive for about 5 to 7 years in the wild, but under the attentive care of humans, I can live up to a remarkable 10 years. Contrary to popular belief, I do not glide along on my belly; what you see is my foot! The slippery slime I produce minimises friction as I move and protects my body from potential damage.

My diet is incredibly diverse, consisting of over 500 plant types, allowing me to enjoy a wide variety of foods. However, there are some items I must steer clear of, particularly anything acidic, citrusy, or salty—such as onions and oranges—since they can be harmful, and in some cases, even fatal. Calcium also plays a crucial role in my diet; it is essential for maintaining my health and, most importantly, keeping my shell strong and resilient.
