Hamster

Hi! I’m the Hamster, a tiny ball of energy and a favourite pet around the globe. My cheek pouches are perfect for storing food as I scavenge around, allowing me to transport snacks back to my burrow. My diet includes seeds, grains, and vegetables; I like to graze most of the day. I am nocturnal and do my best running at night just for exercise's sake. My burrowing skills are impressive.

I like building elaborate hiding and living tunnel systems. I am a favourite among humans because you just want to squeeze my adorable, round cheeks and soft fur more than anything else in the world. My playful behaviour can provide hours of entertainment.

In addition to their diet, hamsters eat meat and various bugs, making them omnivores. There are approximately 20 distinct species of hamsters, each adapted to thrive in a diverse range of habitats, from the arid deserts and grassy plains to shifting dunes and cultivated agricultural fields across Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. Interestingly, many people are unaware that Syrian hamsters experience a state of hibernation during the winter months. This hibernation can sometimes lead to confusion among humans, as it may appear that we have passed away when, in fact, we are simply in a deep sleep, taking only two slow breaths per minute.

Another fascinating aspect of our physiology is our cheeks; we can expertly inflate them, which assists us in swimming. However, swimming is a rarity; we prefer to remain grounded, inhabiting dry environments rather than venturing into the water. We are curious little creatures and love to have as much space as possible to explore, hiding treats to uncover. Watch as we spring into action, enjoying the hunt.
