Greetings! I’m the Giant African Millipede, one of the largest millipedes in the world. And I can grow up to 15 inches long! I spend my days munching on decaying leaves, wood, and other plant material, which is crucial in recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem. My numerous legs, ranging from 100 to 400, depending on my size, help me do this.
Furthermore, my legs allow me to move gracefully and steadily across the forest floor. Each of my segments has two pairs of legs, which work in a coordinated rhythm, making my movements look smooth and flowing. My hard exoskeleton protects against predators; when threatened, I can curl into a tight coil, presenting only my tough exterior. I also secrete a harmless chemical that deters predators. Despite my intimidating appearance, I’m gentle and can make a fascinating, low-maintenance pet.

My lifespan typically ranges from 5 to 7 years, but with attentive care and a balanced diet, I have been known to thrive a bit longer, leading a joyful and fulfilling life. While some may underestimate my uniqueness, I'd like to challenge that notion! Can you imagine being able to smell and taste with various body parts? Well, I possess that fascinating ability!
Many people often confuse me with centipedes, but we are pretty distinct. I am a herbivore, delighting in a diet of lush greens, while centipedes are carnivorous predators equipped with frightening fangs that inject venom into their prey. In stark contrast, I’m a gentle, nurturing creature devoid of venomous traits. Embracing a peaceful existence, I enjoy my natural surroundings and life's simple pleasures.
