Skink

G’day!  I am of the Skink Family, a lizard family known for diversity. Some of us are burrowers, and others are climbers. We’re like the Swiss Army knives of reptiles! Our diets range from insects to fruit and even small vertebrates.

Furthermore, smooth, shiny scales give us a sleek appearance. And yes, we can shed our tails, too. Our adaptability makes us successful in various environments, from forests to deserts.

With over 1,500 species of skinks globally, we come in an astonishing variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. Some of us can be as petite as just a couple of inches, while others can grow to an impressive length of up to 2 feet, varying significantly depending on our specific type. At first glance, we might easily be mistaken for snakes due to our short necks and tiny legs, which lend us a serpentine appearance. Even our movements can mimic those of snakes, gliding smoothly across surfaces.

Interestingly, particular species of skinks have the remarkable ability to give birth to live young instead of laying eggs, with each clutch producing anywhere from 10 to 30 little ones. Despite our reptilian nature, we are gentle and docile creatures, often forming extraordinary bonds with our human companions through love and regular attention. This connection can truly be a rewarding experience, reflecting our affectionate disposition.
