Meet Our Animal Expert and Nutty Professor Susie- Covering Scotland

About Susie:

Susie is a valued Senior Expert within our Wild Science family, dedicated to providing guidance and support to those who seek help with their challenges. As a mother of two teenagers, she naturally embodies a nurturing spirit that extends to many of their friends, often acting as a second mother to them.

Initially, Susie pursued a career as a chef after graduating from school, where she delighted friends and family with her culinary creations. Her passion for cooking not only brought people together around the dinner table but also instilled in her a deep appreciation for the joy that sharing meals can bring. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, she decided to pivot her career. She began her journey as a Carer, initially working with children with special educational needs (SEN) and later extending her compassionate care to residents in a care home, where she created meaningful connections and provided essential support to older people.

Now, as a cherished member of the Wild Science family, Susie brings her exceptional empathy and uplifting energy into her role. Her positive demeanour and ability to connect with others infuse joy and smiles into the lives of everyone around her, making her a crucial source of comfort and assistance to those in need.

What areas does Susie cover?

To quote Susie, “I clearly have the best area; I'm in Scotland.”

Nestled in the heart of this beautiful nation, Susie explores a vibrant array of locations, including bustling Glasgow and the historic streets of Edinburgh. Her coverage extends to the charming towns of Paisley and Perth and the picturesque regions of Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, and Stirlingshire. Not to be missed are Fife's rolling landscapes and the Scottish Highlands' breathtaking vistas, each offering unique opportunities for adventure and learning.

However, Susie's enthusiasm doesn't stop within Scotland's borders. She is always eager to broaden her reach, often venturing into the northern parts of England. With a passion for sharing the wonders of Wild Science, Susie thrives on engaging with diverse communities and encouraging curiosity in science. Her dedication leads her to travel wherever she can, ensuring the joy of discovery can touch as many lives as possible. Whether in a small town or a bustling city, Susie's mission is to spread the excitement and fun of science far and wide.

Susie's favourite part of working for Wild Science:

We asked Susie what her favourite part of working for Wild Science is, and this is what she had to say-

“My Favourite part of working with Wild Science is seeing people’s reactions to the animals. I love when people get excited to meet the gang, but when someone who may be scared of one of them (usually a spider or snake), and watch as their fear starts to disappear. I love changing their mind about the animals and how they are all so gentle.

My favourite memory was a granny who went her whole life being terrified of snakes, but at the end of one of our workshops, she asked if I could help; she had been convinced watching AlHiss (the snake) with the kids. Within 10 minutes, she held him, baby talking to him and wanting more time with him. So, I stayed longer just for her to cuddle him.”

Susie’s experience with Wild Science:

Susie’s time with us at Wild Science has truly been a source of joy and inspiration. Her enthusiasm for science shines brightly as she engages with people of all ages, making the wonders of the natural world, especially its fascinating creatures, come alive through interactive experiments. While many may have preconceived notions that science is dull and inaccessible, Susie thrives on the challenge of changing those perceptions. Her quirky personality and infectious energy add a layer of entertainment to our workshops, making them not just educational but also incredibly enjoyable.

Despite living with a chronic pain condition, Susie’s passion never wavers. At Wild Science, we prioritise our staff's well-being, ensuring they receive the flexibility and support they need to thrive both personally and professionally. We understand that personal issues and health challenges can arise, and we are committed to being compassionate and accommodating. Susie herself has expressed her gratitude, stating, “Wild Science has been really supportive and far better than anywhere I’ve worked before!” Her words reflect the inclusive and understanding culture we strive to nurture, where every team member can excel and contribute their unique talents.

What sessions Susie does:

At Wild Science, Susie plays an integral role in delivering various engaging animal and science sessions. Her expertise spans from animal therapy programs to interactive science workshops, making her a versatile team member. One of Susie's all-time favourite experiences to lead is the Halloween Science Show Spectacular. This workshop is particularly special to her due to its array of themed experiments, which capture the spirit of the holiday. Susie enjoys the opportunity to dress up in playful costumes, bringing an element of fun and silliness that resonates with participants of all ages.

In addition to her work with children, Susie also thrives in parties that cater to a diverse range of audiences. Whether it's providing entertainment for hen do parties, freshers’ events, or adult birthday celebrations, she ensures that everyone has a memorable and enjoyable experience. Her enthusiasm for science and love for connecting with people shine through in every session, making her a beloved figure at Wild Science.

What is her favourite animal/animals?

Susie has an unwavering affection for all creatures, whether small or big, furry or slimy. Her passion for animals is evident in how she cares for them, dedicating her heart and soul to nurturing each one as if it were hers. This love extends beyond her interactions; it shines through in the workshops she conducts, where she shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for animal care with others.

However, there is one creature that Susie tends to avoid: wasps. This isn't due to a lack of admiration; rather, she is allergic to their sting. It's clear that if this allergy didn't exist, she would greet them with the same love and curiosity she shows to every other animal she encounters. Susie’s compassion for all living beings emphasises her deep appreciation for the diversity of the natural world, highlighting her belief that every creature has its unique beauty and importance.

What started her love for animals?

Susie’s journey into the captivating world of animals began with her beloved dogs, but the thrill of discovering frogs in her aunt’s lush garden truly ignited her passion. She would spend hours observing these remarkable creatures, fascinated by their vibrant colours and unique movements. To make them feel at home, she crafted little hideaways from leaves and twigs, creating miniature sanctuaries where they could thrive.

In her younger days, Susie eagerly curled up with her grandad, spending countless afternoons watching animal documentaries. It was during these moments that she fell in love with Steve Irwin's adventurous spirit, who quickly became one of her heroes.

His enthusiasm for wildlife mirrored her own burgeoning passion. Alongside him, David Attenborough's soothing voice captivated her, and his infectious love for animals sparked a deeper curiosity within her.

These remarkable figures inspired Susie to embark on a lifelong quest for knowledge, motivating her to learn everything she could about the diverse creatures that inhabit the planet and the delicate ecosystems they rely on. With each piece of information, her love for the natural world only grew stronger, guiding her journey as a budding environmentalist.

We booked a corporate animal therapy session as part of Mental Health Awareness week, and it was truly loved by everyone. The animal expert Harriet was absolutely fantastic - super knowledgable, engaging and clearly passionate about every animal she introduced us to. The visit included a snake, rabbit, gerbil, snail and more - all of which were super theraputic! It was amazing to see how quickly the team relaxed and connected with the animals. Harriet created such a calm environment that even our more hesitant colleagues were soon happily holding the snake.

We can't recommend Wild Science highly enough - if you're looking to boost morale, reduce stress or just do something a little bit different for your team.
