Top 10 Engaging Scientific Experiments You Can Try at Home
Science is all about curiosity and discovery! Whether you want to keep kids entertained or want to try the scientific method, these cool experiments are for all ages. You can do them at home with common household items or let Wild Science bring the magic to you with our Scientific Experiment Parties across the UK.
1. Elephant Toothpaste Experiment
A classic chemical reaction that makes a foamy eruption! This experiment shows the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide.
You’ll need:
- Hydrogen peroxide (6% or higher)
- Dry yeast
- Warm water
- Dish soap
- Food colouring
How it works: The yeast is the catalyst that breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, making the foam explosion.

2. DIY Invisible Ink
Find out how to make secret messages with lemon juice!
You’ll need:
- Lemon juice
- Cotton bud
- Paper
- Heat source (lamp or candle)
How it works: When heated, the acidic lemon juice oxidises and turns brown, revealing the hidden message.

3. Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano
A classic acid-base reaction that never gets old!
You’ll need:
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Dish soap
- Food colouring
How it works: Vinegar (an acid) reacts with baking soda (a base) to release carbon dioxide, causing the eruption.

4. Rainbow Milk Experiment
Explore surface tension and colour mixing with this fun experiment.
You’ll need:
- Whole milk
- Dish soap
- Food colouring
- Cotton bud
How it works: The dish soap breaks down the fat molecules in the milk, making the colours swirl and mix.
5. DIY Lava Lamp
You’ll need:
- Water
- Oil
- Food colouring
- Alka-seltzer tablets
How It Works: OOil is hydrophobic, meaning it actively moves away from water molecules. When the tablet reacts with the water, it produces carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles rise to the surface, carrying some water with them. Once the carbon dioxide bubbles pop, the water sinks back down below the oil.
