About Char:

We are excited to introduce Char, one of the newest members of our Wild Science family and a true animal expert with a flair for creativity. Char has recently graduated from university, earning a master’s degree in Bio Veterinary Science. This specialised field integrates biological and scientific principles to enhance our understanding of animal health and manage diseases effectively.

Char’s enthusiasm for animals and their well-being is evident in every aspect of her work. During her time at university, she not only excelled academically but also gained practical experience as a swimming teacher, where she worked with both children and adults, helping them develop their swimming skills and confidence in the water. This role honed her ability to communicate effectively and foster positive relationships, skills that she now brings to her role with us.

Her professionalism and genuine passion for animal care make her a remarkable addition to our team. From the moment she joined, it was clear that Char was meant to be here, embracing her responsibilities with dedication and an impressive level of expertise. We are thrilled to have her as part of our Wild Science team, where she will contribute to our mission of promoting animal health and welfare.

Char’s favourite part of working for Wild Science:

Char’s favourite aspect of working for Wild Science is the opportunity to educate people of all ages about the incredible world of animals. She finds immense joy in unveiling the fascinating characteristics that define various species and showcasing their unique personalities. Among her many passions, reptiles hold a special place in her heart. She understands that many individuals harbour fears and misconceptions about these creatures, often viewing them as cold or unapproachable.

Char loves to demonstrate that reptiles, such as lizards and snakes, can be just as affectionate and playful as more traditionally cuddly pets like rabbits or guinea pigs. Through hands-on interactions, she helps dispel myths surrounding these fascinating animals, allowing people to see their warmth and charm. There’s a particular thrill for her when she witnesses someone’s apprehension transform into delight and curiosity as they engage with a creature they once feared. This transformative experience not only defines her role at Wild Science but also fulfils her deeply rooted passion for fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of all animals.

Char’s experience at Wild Science:

Char feels incredibly grateful to be a part of the Wild Science family, as it allows her to pursue her passion for animal rescue and rehabilitation fully. Through this supportive community, she is not only encouraged to express her love for animals but also to share that enthusiasm with others. Char dedicates her time to rescuing and rehabilitating animals in need, and in the process, these animals become cherished members of her family.

During her workshops, participants witness the transformational power of kindness and love, as Char teaches them about the importance of compassion for all living beings. The animals, who once faced hardships, learn to trust again and experience warmth and care, not just from Char but from the many people they encounter. This journey helps them understand the beauty of a gentle and nurturing world.

Furthermore, Wild Science has played a crucial role in enhancing the lives of both Char and her animals. With their support, she has been able to create an environment where her animals feel safe and loved, enabling them to live fulfilling lives. Through these efforts, Wild Science has not only uplifted Char but has also contributed to the well-being of countless animals, highlighting the impact of community and shared values in creating a brighter future for all.

What sessions does Char do?

Char, like all our other team members, is enthusiastic and eager to participate in any workshops offered by Wild Science, whether they focus on animals or various scientific themes. In her animal workshops, she is adept at tailoring her sessions to meet diverse learning needs, providing foundational information about different species as well as delving deeper into specific topics. Some key areas of her workshops include adaptations, rainforest ecosystems, and food chains; subjects she presents with passion and expertise. These engaging sessions are available for schools, parties, and social events, ensuring that people of all ages have the opportunity to learn about the natural world.

In addition to her workshops, Char frequently participates in animal therapy programs at care homes and Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools. These experiences allow individuals to connect with animals, fostering a sense of warmth and love that can be incredibly therapeutic and enriching.

Char’s love for science complements her work with animals, as she enjoys aligning her teaching with the UK school curriculum. She skilfully integrates her master's degree knowledge into her workshops to enhance the learning experience. You will often find her captivating participants with exciting experiments during her States of Matter workshops, where she demonstrates the mesmerising properties of dry ice. Another workshop is creating colourful and fragrant soaps, allowing participants to not only explore the science behind the process but also take home a delightful, tangible reminder of the fun they had. Through her diverse offerings, Char continually inspires curiosity and a love for learning in everyone she meets.

What is her favourite animal/animals?

Char's favourite animal is the cat! With three of them at home, her affection for these charming creatures only deepens. Cats possess such unique and vibrant personalities, and it's fascinating how no two are exactly alike. Char certainly has her hands full with her three calico girls, each of whom keeps her on her toes with their delightful sass and antics.

Her oldest, Mia, at nine years old, is a real sweetheart. With a snuggly and loving personality, Mia would likely join Char during her work sessions if she had the choice, curling up beside her for some quality time. Then there's Poppy, the clever one, who is seven. Char has often marvelled at Poppy's intelligence; the cat has a knack for opening drawers and cupboards in her quest for treats and toys. Remarkably, Poppy even uses a button system to communicate with Char, showcasing her remarkable ability to express her needs and desires.

Finally, there's Loopy Lola, the youngest at five years. Char still fondly remembers rescuing her when she was just a tiny five-week-old kitten. Although Lola has grown up, she retains that playful kitten spirit. It's delightful to see her bounce around, always eager to engage in play and explore her surroundings.

These incredible creatures, although they may share similar appearances, are entirely different in their personalities and quirks, just like humans. Each cat brings a unique dynamic to Char's life, enriching her days with their distinctive traits and unconditional love.

What started her love for animals?

Char’s passion for animals blossomed during her childhood, heavily influenced by her cherished experiences with her Nan’s dog, Etty. From the moment Etty waddled into her life, Char learned the profound meanings of love, friendship, and unwavering loyalty—qualities that animals often offer so freely and instinctively. Etty was more than just a pet; she was a teacher, showing Char the gentle and nurturing side of the animal world, which starkly contrasted with some complexities of human relationships.

Through her bond with Etty, Char discovered the incomparable kindness that animals can bring into our lives. This revelation ignited a deep sense of compassion within her, motivating her to dedicate her life to rescuing and rehabilitating animals in need. Each creature she encounters holds a piece of her heart, a reminder of her early lessons with Etty.

Char has committed herself to giving back the love and kindness that Etty showed her, ensuring that every animal she helps feels valued and cared for. In this ongoing journey, both Char and her furry friends express their gratitude, celebrating a shared connection that continues to open Char's world wider and wider, inviting more animals into her caring embrace.
