Hiss! I’m your friendly corn snake. I don’t have legs, but I move fast by slithering. My skin is smooth and comes in many shades and patterns. I like to hide in fields, forests, and barns. Mice and small animals are my favourite food. I flick my tongue to smell the world around me. I’m not dangerous—I don’t have venom. When I’m scared, I shake my tail like a rattlesnake. But don’t worry, I’m gentle and calm. I love to explore and curl up in warm spots.
Beware of me, for I am a remarkable escape artist, capable of cleverly unlocking my enclosure door if it isn’t secured. With a knack for stealth, I may slip away unnoticed, but if I stay put, you’ll often discover me nestled somewhere warm and cosy, curled up in a serene ball.
Found predominantly in North America, I consider myself an ally to farmers. I adeptly manage the rodent populations that threaten their crops while enjoying a delightful snack. In the wild, my lifespan ranges from 6 to 8 years, but in the care of humans, I can thrive for as long as 20 years, with some lucky individuals reaching up to 27 years.
Despite my slender appearance, many underestimate my size—I can grow up to 6 feet long. I’m a gentle giant with a kind heart, making me an ideal pet for beginners looking for companionship. I quickly learn the unique scent of my humans, recognising them as my caregivers and protectors. When frightened or handled, I instinctively seek comfort in their presence, knowing I am safe with them.
