Will any of these animals make good pets for young children?
While animals can make great pets, not all are easy to care for, and many require specific environments to thrive. Our experts are happy to discuss which animals are suitable for young children and those who may not have had a pet before.
Mammals:
Mammals are often one of the best options for young children. They require a lot of attention, just like any other animal. It’s important to provide the correct size enclosure, care, and diet to ensure they can thrive. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters are typically excellent choices for young kids. With plenty of attention, these mammals will become your child's furry best friends.
Reptiles & Amphibians:
There is a wide variety of reptiles, and while some can be quite challenging for children to care for, others can make excellent first pets. With reptiles, it’s essential to create the right environment, as not all reptiles have the same needs. Proper heating is a significant priority, as incorrect temperatures can affect the animal's health. Keep in mind that many reptiles eat other animals, whether they are insects, mice, or rats, so ensure your child is comfortable with this aspect of care.
Amphibians may not be the best pets for children. Their environments are crucial for their health and well-being. Amphibians' delicate skin necessitates careful handling, particularly with clean hands or those sanitised with scented soaps. They can be more difficult to care for and easily frightened.
Invertebrates:
Certain invertebrates can make excellent pets for children, but others may not be as suitable. Invertebrates are delicate and require a gentle approach for handling and care. It's important to ensure their environment is safe so that nothing falls on them. Giant African Land Snails and Stick Insects are popular choices for young children, as schools and nurseries often use them as pets, teaching kids how to care for them. We do not recommend animals like tarantulas or scorpions for young children or those unfamiliar with them, as they can be temperamental and are often challenging to handle safely.
