More about Special Education Needs Science Workshops

    SEN Workshops: Bespoke and Empathetic

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Science Workshops

In the vast education landscape, there’s a unique and diverse group of learners—those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Like everyone else, they deserve an education customised to their individual abilities and needs.

At Wild Science, we believe in unlocking potential through interactive and therapeutic science workshops that combine animal encounters with engaging science experiments. Every session is designed with empathy, creativity and adaptability so everyone can have an inclusive and empowering experience.

What Happens in a SEN Science Workshop?

Each session is customised for your setting and needs but typically includes:

    • Live Animal Interaction –Students can touch, hold and learn about a range of animals such as reptiles, mammals, amphibians and invertebrates. This helps with sensory regulation, emotional connection and communication.
    • Hands-on Science Experiments – From bubbling potions and colour-changing reactions to exploring textures and materials, we deliver sensory-friendly experiments that are safe, stimulating and fun.
    • Cross-curricular Learning – Our workshops cover areas such as biology, chemistry and environmental science in a way that’s accessible and memorable for every learner.

Workshops can be themed or adapted to meet your specific learning objectives, including:

    • Life cycles and habitats
    • Senses and perception
    • States of matter (solids, liquids, gases)
    • Minibeasts and microhabitats

    Who Do We Serve?

We deliver SEN workshops in a wide range of settings:

    • Mainstream schools
    • Special schools
    • Pupil referral units
    • Sheltered accommodation
    • Community groups and events

Our team has experience supporting children and young adults with:

    1. Learning Difficulties (Moderate to Profound)

    • Every learner deserves a chance to thrive. Our workshops create a safe space where learning difficulties are met with patience and encouragement.

    2. Communication Difficulties

    • Words can be elusive for someone. Through creative methods, we bridge communication gaps and celebrate every attempt at expression.

    3. Behavioral & Emotional Difficulties

    • Emotions run deep. Wild Science workshops compassionately address behavioural challenges, helping individuals navigate their feelings.

    4. Autism/Asperger’s

    • The spectrum is vast, and so are the possibilities. We embrace neurodiversity, fostering understanding and acceptance.

    5. Visual & Hearing Difficulties

    • Sight and sound shape our world. Furthermore, Wild Science workshops adapt to sensory needs, ensuring everyone feels included.

    6. Physical Disabilities

    • Movement is freedom. Additionally, Wild Science create an environment where physical disabilities don’t limit exploration and growth.

    Why Animals? Why Science?

We combine Animal-Assisted Activities with STEM engagement to create special moments of connection, learning and fun. Whether it’s the comfort of stroking a guinea pig or the excitement of a fizzing volcano experiment, our sessions support both emotional development and scientific understanding.

    Going Virtual: SEN Workshops Online

For learners unable to attend in person, we offer interactive virtual workshops. These sessions include:

    • Live animal feeds and Q&A
    • Simple science activities that can be done at home with everyday items
    • Engaging storytelling and visual demonstrations

    Can Parents Participate?

Yes! Parents are welcome to join and support their children during SEN workshops. It’s a great way to connect and celebrate learning together.

We booked a corporate animal therapy session as part of Mental Health Awareness week, and it was truly loved by everyone. The animal expert Harriet was absolutely fantastic - super knowledgable, engaging and clearly passionate about every animal she introduced us to. The visit included a snake, rabbit, gerbil, snail and more - all of which were super theraputic! It was amazing to see how quickly the team relaxed and connected with the animals. Harriet created such a calm environment that even our more hesitant colleagues were soon happily holding the snake.

We can't recommend Wild Science highly enough - if you're looking to boost morale, reduce stress or just do something a little bit different for your team.

Animal visit (Summer Fair Gilmerton Community Centre)
The management committee would like to thank Susie and trainee Amy for bringing the animals to the Community Centres Summer Fair. Once again, they were very popular with adults and children. Those attending said they enjoyed meeting and learning about the animals up close.

We were delighted to have both Shannon & Amy attend our free family event at Crystal Peaks shopping centre this Friday. Their communication on the run-up to our event was great. On the day, the head office called us to check everything was ready & the hosts arrived in plenty of time. We had a lot of very excited guests that got to enjoy a range of fascinating creatures throughout the day. The team were great with the public & very knowledgeable about their little critters. We can't recommend Wild Science enough. Thank you for making our day so good.

Thank you Wild Science for such an amazing party! Amy was super professional and had the kids eating out of the palm of her hand. My son absolutely loved the animals she brought and we were so impressed with how she handled the group (of 3-5 year olds) and gave them interesting and fun facts about each animal which kept all the kids interested and engaged. It was so much fun, we would highly recommend it!!!

Ross was absolutely amazing. So patient, kind and knowledgeable of the animals and the slime workshop. We had a party of 20 and with the madness that ensued he was always calm and reassuring for each child if they were apprehensive of holding any animal - big or small. Would 100% book Wild Science again, especially Ross.
Thank you for making our animal lovers birthday so special!
