SEN Workshops: Bespoke and Empathetic
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Science Workshops
In the vast education landscape, there’s a unique and diverse group of learners—those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Like everyone else, they deserve an education customised to their individual abilities and needs.
At Wild Science, we believe in unlocking potential through interactive and therapeutic science workshops that combine animal encounters with engaging science experiments. Every session is designed with empathy, creativity and adaptability so everyone can have an inclusive and empowering experience.
What Happens in a SEN Science Workshop?
Each session is customised for your setting and needs but typically includes:
- Live Animal Interaction –Students can touch, hold and learn about a range of animals such as reptiles, mammals, amphibians and invertebrates. This helps with sensory regulation, emotional connection and communication.
- Hands-on Science Experiments – From bubbling potions and colour-changing reactions to exploring textures and materials, we deliver sensory-friendly experiments that are safe, stimulating and fun.
- Cross-curricular Learning – Our workshops cover areas such as biology, chemistry and environmental science in a way that’s accessible and memorable for every learner.
Workshops can be themed or adapted to meet your specific learning objectives, including:
- Life cycles and habitats
- Senses and perception
- States of matter (solids, liquids, gases)
- Minibeasts and microhabitats
Who Do We Serve?
We deliver SEN workshops in a wide range of settings:
- Mainstream schools
- Special schools
- Pupil referral units
- Sheltered accommodation
- Community groups and events
Our team has experience supporting children and young adults with:
1. Learning Difficulties (Moderate to Profound)
- Every learner deserves a chance to thrive. Our workshops create a safe space where learning difficulties are met with patience and encouragement.
2. Communication Difficulties
- Words can be elusive for someone. Through creative methods, we bridge communication gaps and celebrate every attempt at expression.
3. Behavioral & Emotional Difficulties
- Emotions run deep. Wild Science workshops compassionately address behavioural challenges, helping individuals navigate their feelings.
4. Autism/Asperger’s
- The spectrum is vast, and so are the possibilities. We embrace neurodiversity, fostering understanding and acceptance.
5. Visual & Hearing Difficulties
- Sight and sound shape our world. Furthermore, Wild Science workshops adapt to sensory needs, ensuring everyone feels included.
6. Physical Disabilities
- Movement is freedom. Additionally, Wild Science create an environment where physical disabilities don’t limit exploration and growth.
Why Animals? Why Science?
We combine Animal-Assisted Activities with STEM engagement to create special moments of connection, learning and fun. Whether it’s the comfort of stroking a guinea pig or the excitement of a fizzing volcano experiment, our sessions support both emotional development and scientific understanding.
Going Virtual: SEN Workshops Online
For learners unable to attend in person, we offer interactive virtual workshops. These sessions include:
- Live animal feeds and Q&A
- Simple science activities that can be done at home with everyday items
- Engaging storytelling and visual demonstrations
Can Parents Participate?
Yes! Parents are welcome to join and support their children during SEN workshops. It’s a great way to connect and celebrate learning together.
