Children’s Fun Science Experiments

13 Easy Science Experiments Kids and Teens Will Love

Science becomes far more exciting when children can see it happen right in front of them. If you're looking for ways to make learning even more interactive, children's fun science experiments are a perfect choice. From bubbling reactions to flying balloons and colourful chemical changes, hands-on experiments help children and teens explore how the world works in a fun and memorable way.

These science experiments are simple to try at home or in the classroom using everyday materials. They encourage curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while making learning feel interactive instead of overwhelming.

At Wild Science, we deliver hands-on science workshops across the UK, helping schools, families, and community groups bring science to life through exciting demonstrations and interactive activities.

Let’s explore some fun science experiments children and teens will love.

Why Hands-On Science Matters

Science is easier to understand when children can take part directly. Instead of only reading about scientific concepts, they can test ideas, observe reactions, and ask questions through real experiments.

These experiences also help make science more enjoyable for children who may struggle with traditional classroom learning.

1. Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano

The baking soda volcano remains one of the most popular science experiments for children because it is simple, exciting, and easy to set up.

Add baking soda to a container, pour in vinegar, and watch the fizzy eruption begin. Food colouring can make the reaction even more dramatic.

This experiment introduces children to chemical reactions and shows how acids and bases react together.

For even more energetic reactions, Wild Science also offers interactive Fizz Bang Pop science workshops across the UK.

2. Rainbow in a Glass

This colourful experiment helps children understand density using sugar, water, and food colouring.

Different sugar concentrations create liquids with different densities. When poured carefully, the colours layer on top of one another to form a rainbow effect inside the glass.

Children enjoy watching the layers form while learning how heavier liquids sink below lighter ones.

3. Homemade Lava Lamp

A homemade lava lamp is a fun way to explore how oil and water behave differently.

Fill a clear bottle with water and oil, then add food colouring and an Alka-Seltzer tablet. Colourful bubbles will move around the bottle, creating a lava lamp effect.

This experiment helps children understand density, gas formation, and why oil and water do not mix.

It is simple, colourful, and always popular with younger learners.

4. Static Electricity Balloon Experiment

This activity introduces children to static electricity using only a balloon and everyday household items.

Rubbing a balloon on hair or fabric creates static charge. The balloon can then attract paper pieces or even make hair stand up.

It’s a simple but effective way to introduce electrons and electrical charges in a fun and engaging way.

For schools wanting to explore electricity further, Wild Science also delivers interactive electricity workshops designed for different age groups.

5. Salt and Ice Experiment

This winter-themed experiment demonstrates how salt affects ice melting.

Place salt on one side of an ice cube and observe how it melts faster than the untreated side.

Children learn how salt lowers the freezing point of water and why roads are salted during icy weather.

It’s a simple activity that connects science to everyday life.

6. Invisible Ink Messages

Invisible ink experiments combine creativity with chemistry.

Children can write hidden messages using lemon juice and allow the paper to dry. When gently heated, the message becomes visible again.

This experiment introduces oxidation and simple chemical reactions while making science feel like a secret mission.

7. Magnetic Slime

Slime experiments are always popular, but magnetic slime adds an extra level of excitement.

By mixing iron filings into slime, children can use magnets to move and shape the slime in unusual ways.

This experiment helps explain:

It also encourages sensory exploration and creativity.

8. Balloon Rocket

Balloon rockets are a brilliant way to introduce basic physics.

Attach a balloon to a straw threaded onto a string. Once released, the escaping air pushes the balloon forward like a rocket.

Children can explore force, motion, and propulsion while testing how air pressure moves the balloon forward.

The experiment also encourages problem-solving as children test different balloon sizes and string lengths.

9. Fizz Bang Pop Experiments

Children naturally enjoy experiments that fizz, pop, and bubble. These reactions create excitement while teaching real scientific concepts.

Wild Science Fizz Bang Pop workshops combine safe demonstrations with interactive learning, helping children explore chemistry through energetic experiments and visual reactions.

These sessions are especially popular during school science weeks and enrichment events.

10. The Egg Drop Challenge

The egg drop challenge encourages creativity, teamwork, and engineering skills.

Children must design protective packaging to stop an egg from breaking when dropped from a height.

This experiment introduces gravity, impact forces, shock absorption, and problem-solving in a fun and creative way.

There is no single correct answer, which makes it ideal for creative thinking.

11. Oobleck: Cornstarch and Water Experiment

Mixing cornstarch and water creates a strange substance known as a non-Newtonian fluid.

When moved slowly, it behaves like a liquid. When pressure is applied, it feels solid.

Children love experimenting with the unusual texture while learning about how materials can behave differently under pressure.

This activity works particularly well for sensory learning environments.

12. Colour Changing Milk

This colourful experiment uses milk, food colouring, and washing-up liquid to create swirling patterns.

When soap touches the milk, it reacts with the fats and causes the colours to move dramatically.

Children learn about surface tension, chemical reactions, and how fat molecules react with soap.

The visual effect makes this experiment especially engaging for younger children.

Wild Science also delivers sensory science workshops that encourage active learning through colour, texture, and movement.

13. Cloud in a Jar

Creating a cloud inside a jar is a great way to demonstrate condensation and weather formation.

Warm water, smoke particles, and ice work together to create a miniature cloud inside the container.

This experiment helps children understand condensation, water vapour, and how clouds form in the atmosphere.

It’s a simple but impressive way to connect science with the natural world.

Making Science Fun for Childrens and Kids

Science experiments help children explore, question, and discover through direct experience. Instead of simply memorising facts, they can see science happening in front of them.

These activities encourage curiosity, creativity, confidence, teamwork, and critical thinking through interactive learning.

Whether at home, in schools, or during events, hands-on science helps children develop a more positive relationship with learning.

Older children and teens can also expand these activities by testing variables, recording results, and creating their own experiment challenges.

What an incredible experience! Booked for my sister’s 31st birthday, we couldn’t have had a better time! Jess immediately made everyone feel at ease and relaxed, was incredibly attentive to my sister’s energy levels (she has severe M.E.), asking if she wanted to take breaks or lay quietly with a Guinea pig.
Jess shared her wealth of knowledge with us in a very humour filled way, answering any questions we had. The animals she brought with her were amazing and all seemed incredibly happy and healthy. Such a range of different animals, a lesser tenrec, a tree frog, two Guinea pigs, a tortoise, a scorpion, a giant snail and a python!
Thank you Jess for such a special birthday treat for my sister, and incredible memories for our whole family to cherish!

You won’t be disappointed!

Ross was absolutely amazing. So patient, kind and knowledgeable of the animals and the slime workshop. We had a party of 20 and with the madness that ensued he was always calm and reassuring for each child if they were apprehensive of holding any animal - big or small. Would 100% book Wild Science again, especially Ross.
Thank you for making our animal lovers birthday so special!
