More about Science of Flight Workshop
How do things fly? The Science of Flight is an interactive, hands-on experience designed to help students master the physical forces of lift, thrust, drag, and gravity through experimental learning. If you're looking for an educational science of flight workshop, this program provides exactly that opportunity.
The Science of Flight is an interactive, hands-on experience where participants explore the forces that make flight possible. Through simple experiments, building activities, and guided demonstrations, learners discover how air, motion, and design work together to lift objects off the ground.
Participants will investigate core ideas in flight science, including:
- How air pressure and airflow create lift
- The roles of thrust, drag, gravity, and weight
- How wing shape and angle affect flight
- Why do different flying objects - birds, planes, and rockets - move the way they do
Using everyday materials, participants will build and test paper gliders, spinning flyers, and air-powered models. By adjusting shapes, angles, and speeds, they will observe how small changes can make a big difference in how something flies. The experience emphasises experimentation - testing ideas, making predictions, and learning through trial and error.
Designed to be playful, engaging, and educational, The Science of Flight encourages curiosity and problem-solving while introducing fundamental physics and engineering concepts. No prior knowledge is required-just a sense of wonder and a willingness to explore.
Are there any safety precautions in the Science of Flight Workshops?
Yes! Before allowing anyone to collect any natural material, we will advise them on what not to touch, and if they are sure, always to ask an adult. Products we do have proven are non-toxic and will not harm your skin if they come into contact.
Why Hands-On Science Works
According to educational research published in the Journal of Science Education, hands-on animal and engineering experiences improve learning retention by 65%. Our workshops are meticulously aligned with UK curriculum standards, ensuring that participants don't just observe flight but understand the underlying physics through practical application that meets specific learning objectives.
Your safety is our priority. Wild Science is a fully licensed and insured provider with over 500 successful events completed. We provide comprehensive risk assessments for every workshop and utilize only non-toxic, child-safe materials during our practical experiments.
Can adults join in?
Of course! We encourage everyone to join our sessions and have fun alongside the children, and even help them out.

Recommended Session Duration and Ages:
Our Science of Flight Workshop is recommended for children of all ages; however, the science can get confusing for younger kids. However, we can adapt the workshop to suit any age group.
We suggest session lengths of 45 minutes to 1 hour, but we are happy to extend the duration if you wish to explore topics in more depth. Additionally, we offer full-day options comprising six 1-hour sessions, ideal for students of all ages.
