What Animals are at Edinburgh zoo

What Animals Can You See at Edinburgh Zoo?

Edinburgh Zoo is one of Scotland’s most popular wildlife attractions, welcoming families, animal lovers, and school groups from across the UK. Home to more than 1,000 animals from around the world, the zoo gives visitors the chance to discover rare species, fascinating wildlife, and conservation programmes all in one place.

From playful penguins to powerful big cats, Edinburgh Zoo offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you are planning a family day out or simply curious about the animals living there, this guide explores some of the most popular creatures you can see at Edinburgh Zoo - along with fun facts children love learning about.

And if you do not have time to travel but still want children to experience amazing animals up close, Wild Science can bring educational animal encounters directly to your home, school, birthday party, or event anywhere in the UK.

Famous Animals at Edinburgh Zoo

Edinburgh Zoo is home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Visitors can explore animals from different continents while learning about wildlife conservation and animal welfare.

Some of the zoo’s most famous animals include:

  • lions and tigers
  • chimpanzees and orangutans
  • penguins and flamingos
  • zebras and wallabies
  • lemurs and meerkats
  • reptiles, frogs, and insects

Children especially enjoy interactive exhibits where they can observe animals behaving naturally, climbing, swimming, feeding, or relaxing in specially designed habitats.

Please note: the information below is based on publicly available information about Edinburgh Zoo and its animal collections. Animal exhibits and species may change over time, so we cannot guarantee that every animal mentioned is currently present at the zoo. Visitors should always check the official zoo website before travelling.

Families who enjoy wildlife experiences may also love our mobile petting zoo Edinburgh and hands-on animal encounter events.

At Wild Science, we can bring many fascinating animals directly to homes, schools, birthdays, and events across the UK. Depending on the session and animal welfare considerations, our experiences may include:

  • rabbits and guinea pigs
  • reptiles and amphibians
  • snakes and geckos
  • giant snails and stick insects
  • tarantulas and mini beasts
  • mammals and educational animal encounters

Families can also explore our children’s parties, reptile parties, and engaging mini beast workshops.

Did You Know? Edinburgh Zoo Fun Facts

Edinburgh Zoo is famous for several unique attractions and conservation projects.

Did You Know?

Edinburgh Zoo was once the only place in the UK where visitors could see giant pandas. The zoo became internationally known for helping raise awareness about endangered species conservation.

Fun Penguin Fact

The zoo’s penguin parade is one of its most famous attractions. Selected penguins leave their enclosure and waddle around a designated area while visitors watch from nearby paths.

Did You Know?

Edinburgh Zoo cares for many endangered species and works with international conservation programmes to help protect vulnerable wildlife populations.

These educational experiences are one reason children often become more interested in animals, science, and nature after visiting zoos and wildlife parks.

Endangered Animals and Conservation Efforts

Edinburgh Zoo plays an important role in wildlife conservation and species protection. Several endangered animals at the zoo are part of international breeding and conservation programmes designed to support vulnerable species.

Animals linked with conservation work include:

  • red pandas
  • Asiatic lions
  • Scottish wildcats
  • chimpanzees
  • rare birds and amphibians

The zoo also helps educate visitors about habitat destruction, climate change, and the importance of protecting biodiversity around the world.

Children interested in wildlife education often enjoy Wild Science’s animal parties and educational science workshops that combine fun with hands-on learning.

Animals Children Love Most at Edinburgh Zoo

Some animals naturally become favourites with younger visitors. Penguins, monkeys, meerkats, and big cats are usually among the most popular attractions because of their playful and energetic behaviour.

Reptiles and insects are also surprisingly popular with children. Many kids become fascinated by snakes, geckos, giant snails, and stick insects after seeing them up close.

Fun Fact About Reptiles

Some reptiles can sense vibrations through the ground instead of hearing sounds the same way humans do.

At Wild Science, children can often meet fascinating reptiles and mini beasts during our reptile encounter experiences and engaging mini beast workshops.

Bring the Zoo Experience to Your Home or Event

Visiting a zoo is exciting, but not every family has the time to travel long distances or manage busy visitor attractions. That is why many parents, schools, and organisations now choose mobile animal encounters instead.

Wild Science brings educational animal experiences directly to homes, schools, birthdays, community events, and care settings across the UK. Children can enjoy hands-on animal encounters in a calmer and more personal environment while learning about habitats, behaviours, and animal welfare.

Our sessions may include:

  • rabbits and guinea pigs
  • reptiles and amphibians
  • giant snails and insects
  • educational animal talks
  • supervised handling experiences

Families planning celebrations can also explore our children’s parties and exciting science birthday parties.

Why Families Choose Wild Science

Wild Science combines education, entertainment, and animal experiences to create memorable sessions for children of all ages.

Unlike crowded attractions, our mobile animal encounters create opportunities for children to ask questions, interact with animals safely, and learn through hands-on experiences. Sessions are supervised by experienced handlers who prioritise safety, animal welfare, and educational engagement.

Whether you are organising a birthday party, school workshop, or family event, Wild Science helps bring the wonder of animals directly to your chosen venue.

What an incredible experience! Booked for my sister’s 31st birthday, we couldn’t have had a better time! Jess immediately made everyone feel at ease and relaxed, was incredibly attentive to my sister’s energy levels (she has severe M.E.), asking if she wanted to take breaks or lay quietly with a Guinea pig.
Jess shared her wealth of knowledge with us in a very humour filled way, answering any questions we had. The animals she brought with her were amazing and all seemed incredibly happy and healthy. Such a range of different animals, a lesser tenrec, a tree frog, two Guinea pigs, a tortoise, a scorpion, a giant snail and a python!
Thank you Jess for such a special birthday treat for my sister, and incredible memories for our whole family to cherish!

You won’t be disappointed!

George Brown was booked for our granddaughter's birthday party. He and his wonderful animal friends enthralled everyone there from 2 years old to 70 somethings. George has a wonderful gift for communicating his knowledge and love of the animals he generously shared with us. Book him! You won't be disappointed.

Wholly recommended the experience with Wild Science. From the telephone call through to the day itself, the team are professional and very communicative. Harriet was amazing with the animals and children. Our birthday girl and friends had such a great time petting the animals (as much or as little as they wanted to). Harriet had some wonderful facts to share and responded so sensitively and helpfully to answer all questions the children had. Thanks so much- it was a delight to have you for our daughter’s birthday party.

We booked a corporate animal therapy session as part of Mental Health Awareness week, and it was truly loved by everyone. [...] Harriet was absolutely fantastic - super knowledgable, engaging and clearly passionate about every animal she introduced us to. [...] Harriet created such a calm environment that even our more hesitant colleagues were soon happily holding the snake. We can't recommend Wild Science highly enough - if you're looking to boost morale, reduce stress or just do something a little bit different for your team.

The animal expert we were lucky enough to have from wild science was excellent. She even managed to keep the kids at a 7 year old birthday party relatively quiet and very interested. Would highly recommend.

Thank you Wild Science for such an amazing party! Amy was super professional and had the kids eating out of the palm of her hand. My son absolutely loved the animals she brought and we were so impressed with how she handled the group (of 3-5 year olds) and gave them interesting and fun facts about each animal which kept all the kids interested and engaged. It was so much fun, we would highly recommend it!!!

Ross was absolutely amazing. So patient, kind and knowledgeable of the animals and the slime workshop. We had a party of 20 and with the madness that ensued he was always calm and reassuring for each child if they were apprehensive of holding any animal - big or small. Would 100% book Wild Science again, especially Ross.
Thank you for making our animal lovers birthday so special!
